Christine and I had an opportunity to view the movie “A Beautiful Mind” again recently. It is one of my favorite movies. Seeing the end of the movie reminded me of the inspiration for the opening song on Sweetbird’s first CD, Free Spirit Reflection. The lyrics to the song, “Equations of Love,” flowed effortlessly after I arrived home from movie theater. I was greatly moved by John Nash’s Nobel Prize acceptance speech.
Here’s what Nash said to his wife, in front of the Nobel Prize audience in Stockholm, Sweden:
“I’ve always believed in numbers. In the equations and logics that lead to reason.
But after a lifetime of such pursuit, I ask: What truly is logic? Who decides reason?
My quest has taken me to the physical, the metaphysical, the delusional, and back.
And I have made the most important discovery of my career; the most important discovery of my life.
It is only in the mysterious equations of love that any logic or reasons can be found.
I’m only here tonight because of you. You are the reason I am. You are all my reasons.
Thank You.”
Ah yes, those mysterious equations of love. You won’t find them written down in any science book. You won’t find them scribbled in the halls of Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Oxford or Cambridge. No. You will only find the mysterious equations of love written on your heart. That is the realm that the Spirit, Who is love, operates.
As the Spirit said through the apostle Paul to the Corinthians, if we have not love, we are nothing. (1 Corinthians 13:2).
May your heart be filled greatly with love.
